We recently had a visit from one of our favorite customers as she was passing through for family reunions in Tennessee.  Diana T. from Florida dropped her bike off for some work to be done and we loved having her stop at Rhoades Car HQ.  When she came back through to pick up her Rhoades Car, we had to take some pictures.  We’re glad that she’s a part of the Rhoades Car family and look forward to her passing through again whenever she can!

MID-YEAR REVIEW

25th Anniversary Bike

We’ve spent the last week reviewing how the first half of the year has done and we’re extremely pleased with 2016.  One thing that has really exceeded our expectations is the 25th Year Anniversary bike.  When we set out to offer something different for our 25th year, we wanted something fun, all-inclusive, and discounted.  We knew the custom paint would add a level of fun and the accessory upgrade would make it all-inclusive for some of the most popular upgrades available.  And the discount is what threw it over the top and we’re glad we packaged this bike the way we did.  We’ve seen customers price it out separately and find that is really does saves hundreds of dollars.  When they realize this, it’s great to see and hear their reactions!  We truly are grateful for the past six months and are looking forward to seeing what the next six months will bring.  Thank you for watching us grow and for being a part of the Rhoades Car family!

P.S. If you’re looking for a reason to celebrate Christmas in July, we have the perfect gift for you!

Everyone please meet Bob.  Bob visited us back in April at the Rhoades Car HQ and placed his order on the spot.  We had the pleasure of getting to know him and his grandson while they were passing through on a road trip.  The picture below is of Bob and his new Rhoades Car on his 90th birthday!!  What a great guy and here’s to many more Bob!

“I use the bike at least 3 times a week to ride to the community fitness center where I work out for about 30 minutes.  Part of my exercise program is riding the bike the 1 mile to the center and back again after the workout.

BRINGING NEW LIFE
IMG_8025
After 25 years of business, Rhoades Cars have fulfilled many different purposes and platforms.  It’s truly a joy to see how many different applications our bikes have taken on over the years and how many lives have been impacted at every level.  One of our growing markets is with assisted living and rehabilitation facilities throughout the U.S..  In particular our two and four seat models have changed the atmosphere of on-site amenities for patient experiences and living.  From an active living standpoint, our bikes allow guests to ride a four-wheel bike and get active exercise while also allowing their family members or friend along for the ride.  The rehabilitation facilities allow our bikes to be used for the guests to rebuild their necessary bones or muscles in order to regain strength.  Since we have multiple seat options, trainers and physical therapists can join their patients on the ride while working or assisting with them on their exercise movements in riding the Rhoades Car.   It brings a new quality of life to these facilities and in most cases it mutually benefits the patients and their family members when everyone gets involved (not to mention the outdoor aspect which most don’t get to enjoy).  You can see that this provides strength to a physical body but it also improves the mental state as well by being able to enjoy an activity where you’re enjoying the outdoors and allowing your mind and body to work together in a controlled environment.  We’re excited to be a part of this growing market and will continue to help make customized improvements for each facility based on their specific needs.

We had the pleasure to work with a new customer this past month and actually customized a 4W1P model into a 25th Year Anniversary Bike.  She couldn’t wait to receive her custom-made bike and we couldn’t wait for her to get it.  We are thrilled the way it turned out and we know she’s riding her local streets showing off a limited edition bike that draws the eyes of everyone around!

Rhoades Car Owners Experience Significant Weight Loss

The country is fat. Over two-thirds are overweight or obese (68.7%) according to the National Bureau of Health Statistics. Obesity rates have grown from 15% in 1976-80 to 35% today. Why should we care about this growing (pun intended) phenomenon?

“If we fail to reverse our nation’s obesity epidemic, the current generation of young people may be the first in American history to live sicker and die younger than their parents’ generation.” (Source: “F as in Fat 2013: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future”, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 8/13)

This report says an integral part of the solution is to emphasize biking and walking. In other words, shows like Leave It to Beaver and My Three Sons commonly saw kids biking and walking. Shows today spotlight kids on Smart Phones sitting in fast food restaurants or on the couch at home.

We at Rhoades Car see these stats as totally unacceptable and are working hard to contribute to the solution. The following four testimonials from our customers tell what we are doing much better than we can tell you. The first one just came in last week:

Hope you remember us. I am the short little fat lady that u built a bike especially for me. You guys forgot to tell me how hard it was going to be to pedal this bike but I have mastered 14 miles a day and lost 30 pounds. We have given several people your number we are stopped constantly and asked where we got the bike from. People are taking pictures and stop us. It becomes difficult to get in a good ride. It is hard work but I love my bike and it is special to me. I cannot thank you enough for working with us. (Dorothy Zaiger, Glen Haven, FL 030915)

What are the chances she would be going to a gym or some other type of exercise facility? What are the chances she would be walking 14 miles a day? She is riding her Rhoades Car because she loves it. She loves it because it’s something she can DO…SAFELY.

Second, we’ve been reporting regularly on Dean Cagley in White House, TN who has now lost 215 lbs. since January, 2014!  At that time, he was in a wheel chair, facing back surgery for spinal stenosis. He has avoided surgery, now walks without a cane, and is back to work. He rides his Rhoades Car twice a day on a nearby greenway. His wife goes with him in the evening and has maintained a 50 lb. weight loss. Again, let him tell you:

Third, Stella, a 58 year old woman from Arkansas, reported a 42 lb. weight loss on her Rhoades Car, which she loves so much she named “Rhoda”. Many people say “it’s too hilly where I live”. You can see in Stella’s testimonial that she rode it on steep hills while she lost the weight. She moved to a place with flat ground and she says she has to pedal a lot harder and faster to keep up the level of exercise she was used to.

Fourth, a viewer on the Rhoades Car YouTube page had this to say:

“I just want to say that you people have an amazing product, this vehicle is also a good instrument for health and exercise. Can you imagine the overall health benefits that people will get from the use of this vehicle if they made this a core part of their lifestyle followed with a regular diet of fruits and vegetables, especially with the obesity epidemic going on in the nation, this will definitely be a blessing for anyone to own one this will definitely be a blessing for anyone to own one of these, it looks fun too. Keep up the good work and God bless.”   042514

Most people will agree it’s very, very difficult to maintain a diet and exercise program. Tread mills and stair climbers often end up as coat hangers. For the most part, people who invest in a Rhoades Car use it, and that’s a huge reason for these success stories. Moreover, many buy a two-seater because they can exercise with and enjoy spending quality time with someone they care about. Some buy four seaters and it becomes a family affair.

How about you? Need or want to drop some pounds? Want to spend time with someone in a fresh, outdoor setting away from television and video games? Spring is just around the corner and there simply isn’t a better time to enjoy a Rhoades Car. Then you can send us YOUR story and it will be YOU that we are talking about! spring

Maintaining a reasonable weight is not just about looking great. It extends your life so you have more time to spend with the people you love. If you mention this article, we will be happy to give you a 15% discount to make it easier for you to acquire your very own Rhoades Car.* Call us at 800-531-2737 between 8-5 CST Monday – Friday to claim your discount.

Rhoades Car Creates Out-of-the-Box Solution to Increase Participation in Corporate Wellness Programs

Rhoades Car International, the nation’s leading 4-wheel bicycle manufacturer, announces the release of its collection of wellness bikes, designed to increase employee participation in corporate wellness programs and join the national fight against obesity. The company can customize the bikes and educational material with an “I’m Gettin’ Fit with [Employer Name]” theme. Wellness bike - 2 person

“Because working adults make up 2/3 of the adult population and spend at least half their waking hours in the workplace, worksite wellness programs hold the most promise to lower the obesity rate and get people healthier”, says Bill Pomakoy, President, “but the key is getting employees to participate. We at Rhoades Car believe we hold that key by making exercise play.”

Phyllis Shelton, VP of Marketing says, “Many companies have had a wellness program for several years and have been unsuccessful in getting especially the high-risk employees to participate, such as those who are weight-challenged or who have balance issues or who have had joint replacements. Our wellness bikes make exercising fun since they allow employees to pedal side-by-side in different gears and have an enjoyable visit while exercising. Our new GoBoy X4 allows four employees to ride together, and our one-seater models are super comfortable with a seat that feels more like a car seat than a bicycle seat.” Wellness SportPed 1 seater

Customer Service Director Holly Skinner adds, “According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who were obese had medical costs that were $1,429 higher than the cost for people of normal body weight. Obesity also has been linked with reduced worker productivity and chronic absence from work. Put all these together and there’s plenty of justification for an employer to think outside the box and use our wellness bikes to get employees excited about exercising!”

In support of these claims, Dean Cagley from White House, Tennessee reports losing 155 lbs. in eight months by riding his Rhoades Car.

Shelton updates this information by adding that Mr. Cagley has lost 190 pounds as of the end of October.

Lawrence Vivenzio, Director of Inside Sales, points out that Rhoades Car industrial bikes easily build exercise into the workday. “If a company is looking for a healthy way for four employees to travel around a large plant or factory, the GoBoy X4 with its 28” x 15” cargo area is a perfect fit.”

Rhoades Car International offers a unique line of 1, 2 and 4-person quadricycles with multiple speeds that provides sustainable transportation for families and industry. Celebrating its 23rd year in business in 2014, the company relies on American suppliers as much as possible to produce custom components for all of its 4-wheel “quad” bikes. Rhoades Car is privately owned and is an approved federal GSA vendor (GS-03F-026A).

Six Really Cool Ways to Take a Break at Work

Photo from Facebook by Joe MayoPhoto from Facebook by Joe Mayo

Photo from Facebook by Joe Mayo

Because we’re a company that makes 4-wheel bikes, we focus a lot on physical health and exercise. But mental health is just as important as fitness.

Giving your mind a rest during the day is a good thing for your mental wellness. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), while a little bit of stress can actually be good for you, too much stress can be detrimental to your overall health.

Because of this, the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (CAMFT) suggests that a 10-minute break during the workday can be extremely beneficial.

What do I do for a break?

The most important thing is to do is walk completely away from your computer or whatever it is that’s causing you stress, writes the APA.  Whether it’s 10 minutes or 20 minutes, you are likely to come back with a new perspective on the stressor.

Here are some break ideas, courtesy of the CAMFT and APA:

  • Go for a walk (or bike ride, if possible) – Exercise is proven to help relieve stress. If you can get outside to get some air, even better.
  • Stretch – If you don’t have enough time to get a quick lap in somewhere, at least take a couple of minutes to stand up and stretch.
  • Schedule some “me” time – Take your break to schedule something later in the day or week for yourself. Maybe you should schedule a massage … or a shopping trip … or dinner with the girls … or watching the game with the guys.
  • Take a nap – Even a 10 minute nap can help you decompress.
  • Meet up with a friend or colleague – Call a friend. Meet colleagues at the water cooler. Or, maybe combine two ideas and walk around the building with some of your co-workers.
  • Try deep breathing, meditating or prayer – Whichever you prefer, they all can help you be more mindful of the stressful task you’re dealing with.

How often should I take a break?

According to research cited by the Huffington Post, work is best done when in a 90-minute cycle.  So, try working for 90 minutes, then taking a short break. You may be surprised how much less stressful your day is.

What about vacations?

Those are important, too! According to a 2010 study, anticipation of an upcoming trip or vacation can help improve mental health for as much as two months in advance of the break.

According to research published in Scientific American magazine, increasing downtime has shown to not only renew concentration but potentially increase attention as well. By taking a break, you have the ability to come back to the situation or stressor with a renewed or different perspective and will improve your mental health. If you can get outside for a walk or a bike ride during your break, you’ll improve your physical health as well.

5 Quick and Easy Daily Exercise Tips

Photo from Flickr by Kevin Dooley

Photo from Flickr by Kevin Dooley

Let’s face it. When it comes to exercising, we tend to brush it aside pretty quickly. It takes too much time, we say. Who has time to go to the gym after work when the kids need to be fed and laundry needs to be done and you have a big presentation at work tomorrow?

Juggling life isn’t easy. But exercising doesn’t always have to be complicated. Yes, going to the gym or getting outside to exercise is important, but there are other quick and easy ways to get a couple of minutes of exercise in while you’re working on other things.

Here are some of our favorite suggestions. Give these a try. We’re willing to bet you can squeeze some of these into your daily routine.

1. Going to the store? Park farther away from the door.

Why would you want to do that? Because the extra few steps you walk are a good way to get a brief bit of exercising in.  If you’re going grocery shopping and you have a couple of extra minutes, consider pushing your cart an extra lap around the store before heading to the checkout. Or take an extra lap around the mall. Either way, be sure to wear comfortable shoes!

2. Cooking dinner? Do counter push-ups in the kitchen.

It may seem bizarre at first glance, but this suggestion from Prevention Magazine actually makes a lot of sense. While you’re waiting for dinner to bake or water to boil, put your arms on the counter and do some standing push-ups. The article suggests standing about an arm’s length away from the counter for maximum impact.

3. Watching TV? Grab a quick workout during commercial breaks.

Instead of sitting and watching commercials, take advantage of the time and try this simple exercise suggested by Seventeen magazine called a “Star Pass.” Here’s how the article describes it:

“Start in a standing position with your arms over your head, holding the remote control in between both hands. Bend to your right, lifting your left leg off the ground so that your body looks like a star. Then repeat to the left.”

4. Eating lunch at work? Sneak a quick walk in on your lunch break.

More and more professionals are taking advantage of their midday 30- or 60-minute breaks to get a brisk walk in. According to Fitness Magazine, a walk is not only good for you physically, but it will help make you more productive in those sluggish afternoon hours than sitting and eating lunch at your desk.

5. Have chores to do around the house? Make them exercise moments.

The American Heart Association offers several great tips for making the most out of those household chores we dislike so much. Use a push mower to mow the grass. Take the dog for a walk. Stretch while reaching things on high shelves. Squat to reach things on low shelves. If possible, walk or bike to the store instead of driving. All of these things seem minor, but together would add up to a fairly substantial workout.

While those may be our favorites, there are many, many more possibilities for adding exercise moments to your daily routine.  What are some things you’re doing to improve your exercising during the week? Leave us a comment, we would love to hear about it.

How to burn 300 – 500 calories an hour

By incorporating exercises into things we already do every day, we create new habits for ourselves that will improve our health. If you don’t have time to go to the gym, try some of these exercises, then try a more rigorous workout on days when you have a less hectic schedule. Establishing a routine is important!

Want to know our secret way to burn 300 – 500 calories per hour? Read this.

Jim and Nita Armour from Somerville, TN visited Rhoades Car last week and couldn’t say enough good things about their red GoBoy X2.
