We recently had a visit from one of our favorite customers as she was passing through for family reunions in Tennessee.  Diana T. from Florida dropped her bike off for some work to be done and we loved having her stop at Rhoades Car HQ.  When she came back through to pick up her Rhoades Car, we had to take some pictures.  We’re glad that she’s a part of the Rhoades Car family and look forward to her passing through again whenever she can!

MID-YEAR REVIEW

25th Anniversary Bike

We’ve spent the last week reviewing how the first half of the year has done and we’re extremely pleased with 2016.  One thing that has really exceeded our expectations is the 25th Year Anniversary bike.  When we set out to offer something different for our 25th year, we wanted something fun, all-inclusive, and discounted.  We knew the custom paint would add a level of fun and the accessory upgrade would make it all-inclusive for some of the most popular upgrades available.  And the discount is what threw it over the top and we’re glad we packaged this bike the way we did.  We’ve seen customers price it out separately and find that is really does saves hundreds of dollars.  When they realize this, it’s great to see and hear their reactions!  We truly are grateful for the past six months and are looking forward to seeing what the next six months will bring.  Thank you for watching us grow and for being a part of the Rhoades Car family!

P.S. If you’re looking for a reason to celebrate Christmas in July, we have the perfect gift for you!

Everyone please meet Bob.  Bob visited us back in April at the Rhoades Car HQ and placed his order on the spot.  We had the pleasure of getting to know him and his grandson while they were passing through on a road trip.  The picture below is of Bob and his new Rhoades Car on his 90th birthday!!  What a great guy and here’s to many more Bob!

“I use the bike at least 3 times a week to ride to the community fitness center where I work out for about 30 minutes.  Part of my exercise program is riding the bike the 1 mile to the center and back again after the workout.

A PIECE OF HISTORY
IMG_1255

Seen here is the first ever Rhoades Car built.  This particular bike was made in 1989 which was two years before Rhoades Car was actually started.  David Rhoades created this bike and went on to create a strong and solid business of making quality quadracycles for years to come.  This unique piece of history is displayed in our new “Rhoades Car Headquarters” conference room.  We host Rhoades Car customers, partners, and enthusiasts in our newly remodeled room and we’re especially proud of this bike and the story that it holds.  We love having visitors come and check out our facility.  This past week we had a couple from Memphis, TN come and tour our headquarters and they increased their Rhoades Car fleet from one GoBoy to two so that both can enjoy their time together outdoors.  We also had a gentleman and his grandson, from Miami, FL,  stop by on their way to Virginia as a part of their grandfather/grandson road trip.  He ended up purchasing a brand new 4W1P model and he’s extremely excited to get his new bike out on the streets of his neighborhood.  We cannot tell you how proud we are of our facility but also how much we enjoy having visitors.  We love how people get to see an inside look at our operations and get a better understanding of what all we do here.  You also get to test drive certain models and sometimes even get to see things we don’t have on the market yet!  If you’re ever in the area or even passing through, we’d love to have you stop by  and say hey.

From an 80 year old man who has owned his Rhoades Car for 17 years and has put 50,000 miles on it. when asked if it was worth the investment:
“H*** YES! It has been more than worth it. It’s the best thing I’ve ever bought, and I’d be lost without it. It’s the best form of transportation I’ve ever owned, and the best part is NEVER needing gas!”

The People Who Inspire Us

We all know who they are. The history teacher who made you believe you were smart enough to go to college. The coach who made you better than you thought you could ever be. Your five year old child who taught you how to deal with grief when your dad passed away.

For Paula Weatherly, it was her husband of 30 years, Philip Todd Weatherly. For me, it’s Paula as well as Phil. Phil had departed this life by the time she woke up Monday morning after doing really well over the 4th of July holiday weekend, joking and enjoying his family as he always did. When we spoke the next day, in one breath she was saying she didn’t know how she could possibly live without him. In the next, she said she chooses to thank God for the time they had together…all 30 years of it…and she refuses to complain about the time they won’t have. Having talked with Paula many times since Phil was diagnosed with cancer a few months ago, I knew she loved him more than life itself. To hear her make that statement humbled me immensely as I thought about all the reasons I can find to complain about something.

Phil came to Hendersonville, Tennessee for his dealer training and the Rhoades Car experience as we like to call it. He spent the night at the Rhoades Car lodge and couldn’t say enough great things about the steak dinner he enjoyed.

Rhoades Car Lodge

Rhoades Car Lodge

After a full day of dealer training, we found time for a tour of Hendersonville before his plane left the next day. We laughed for hours as he found plenty to say about my Nascar driving!

After he left, Bill and I were inspired and uplifted by the sheer joy that emanated from this man. He was our newest dealer, and yet we felt as though he was an old friend.  The terrible illness that took his life did nothing to dampen his joy. He had a large family and was extremely busy as he balanced his family time with his equipment rental business and with his Rhoades Car dealership. Yet he never made us feel rushed or minimized when we called him. He was one of those rare individuals who truly had enough love to go around. Here he is with Tripp and Charlee, his son Brandon’s children and Addy, who belongs to his daughter Cathryn…

When someone like Phil Weatherly passes from this life to the next, I think the most important lesson they would impart to us if they could is for us to appreciate the people in our lives today.

Start the National Bike Challenge on May 1st with a Rhoades Car

We often hear the question, “Where can you ride a Rhoades Car?” Our usual answer is through neighborhoods, small towns, parks and greenways. The one person models are barely three feet wide and the 2 person GoBoy is 38.5” wide so many bike lanes will accommodate that width. However, we have two new customer stories that we wanted to share about how a Rhoades Car is being used. They are simply too good not to share!

Retired Air Force Colonel Joel Martin

Ret. Colonel Joel Martin

Ret. Colonel Joel Martin

Colonel Martin and his wife Elizabeth are relocating to the Marshall Islands where he will be working as a tropical meteorologist. Their new residence, the beautiful island of Kwajalein, is about 2300 miles southwest of Hawaii. So the Martins will have a few years in paradise….but a challenge arose in this spectacular move. No cars are allowed on Kwajalein. Colonel Martin is an adventurous soul…his nickname in the military is “Phoon” as he likes to chase typhoons from time to time! So this challenge didn’t deter him at all because he had been seeing Rhoades Car ads in magazines like Popular Mechanics for years and had always wanted one. His new SportPed is just leaving the west coast on a barge this week to Kwajalein. He chose the large curved windshield for its wind resistance and UV ray protection. He chose mag wheels to avoid rust from the nearby salt water. He chose a cargo box so he can transport his equipment easily as he rides around the island. Also of significant interest is that he wants to lose as few pounds and he knows the pedal power will get him there! He told us today that he may upgrade to a pedal assist solar-powered motor once he gets the lay of the land.

We are very excited about having Colonel Martin in the Rhoades Car family because he is a professional photographer and videographer as well. You can see some of his beautiful work here: http://jdavid.smugmug.com/ He will be sending us spectacular pictures of his new Rhoades Car very soon.

But you don’t have to live on an exotic island to enjoy a Rhoades Car.

Dr. Stephanie Timmer

Zooming back to the U.S., Dr. Stephanie Timmer, the only visually impaired member of the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team, is riding her 4 seater Cycle Car all over Naperville, IL (population 145,000). She rides it 3 miles through subdivisions to her gym and her throwing field. It’s a quick ride from her condo to downtown Naperville. When she goes to a restaurant, she valet parks. When she has her children, they ride in the back seat. She reports that a Mini-Cooper car cover makes a perfect cover for her Rhoades Car. She is adding a stereo and matching cup holder plus some Olympic decals. Now, she intentionally did not get a motor as she considers pedal power part of her exercise program. The police are very friendly toward her as they view her Cycle Car as a bike.

So these are two great stories that amplify our answer about where one can ride a Rhoades Car. But here’s an additional list from our FAQ page that will make you smile:

  • an eco-friendly family in Greensburg, KS who recently gave up their gas-powered family car for a 4-person Rhoades Cycle Car with electric motor
  • Grandparents in NC who “had the best vacation of their lives” with their teenaged grandchildren
  • An undertaker in Texas who needed a novel way to advertise his business
  • A lady in Ohio, who waged a political campaign from her 2 seat Rhoades Car
  • A guy in Florida starting his second trip around the state by bike
  • A lady from Rochester New York who rode a Greyhound bus to our plant in Tennessee to pick up her 2-person Cycle Car — and then rode it home.
  • The state Governor of a Middle Eastern oil country who had two 4-person Rhoades Car bikes flown over to him. (We’re really not sure what he’s using them for!).

So what you waiting for? The National Bike Challenge starts today! Let People for Bikes (the sponsoring organization) know that you are knockin’ it out of the park on a RHOADES CAR!

14 Miles a Day on a Rhoades Car!

Hope you remember us. I am the short little fat lady that u built a bike especially for me. You guys forgot to tell me how hard it was going to be to pedal this bike but I have mastered 14 miles a day and lost 30 pounds. We have given several people your number we are stopped constantly and asked where we got the bike from. People are taking pictures and stop us. It becomes difficult to get in a good ride. It is hard work but I love my bike and it is special to me. I cannot thank you enough for working with us. Dorothy Zaiger Glen Haven, FL 030915

Man Loses 155 Lbs. in 8 Months and Other Customer Stories

It’s not just about the money. We as a company treasure testimonials from our customers who are having fun on their Rhoades Car, while truly being helped.  So while we tell you about our September Special, here are four that really touched us. The first two are recent blogs you may have missed, and the last two just happened.

  • Man from White House, TN Loses 155 Lbs. in Eight Months.–  We met Dean Cagley in January of this year in a wheel chair. With spinal and disk issues, he was headed for surgery. He now barely uses a cane and has avoided surgery. He rides 10 miles a day and has been able to go back to work. His wife shares half of the ride and has lost 50 lbs. without doing anything else!
  • Autistic Man in 12th Year of Riding a Rhoades Car Twelve years ago, the Reid family in Oak Forest, IL pooled their savings to buy their autistic son a Rhoades Car. It pulled him out of depression from losing his job and he has been riding ever since. Bill, his mother and sister visited the Rhoades Car factory last week to pick up a new tire, the first part the bike has needed in the entire 12 years!

So it’s not just about the money, but everybody loves to save money. So if you’ve been thinking about a Rhoades Car, now is the time with our September special:

Save up to $250 off a Rhoades Car AND get free turn signals!

  • Toni Braun in Altona, Manitoba bought a Rhoades Car six months ago.  A severe head injury forced him to give up riding a two wheel bike due to balance issues. He had heard about Rhoades Car many years ago and credits God with helping him find us. He is so happy with his Rhoades Car as his main transportation PLUS he gets to spend time with his wife and other people he picks up along the way. He was especially glad it arrived fully assembled and said, “I was so impressed with the quality workmanship that went into this thing.” You can see the entire story here.

Save up to $250 off a Rhoades Car AND get free turn signals!

  • A couple in Jonesboro, TN picked up their bike two weeks ago.  The husband is a professor at East Tennessee State University and a psychologist. He was an avid cyclist until he had 2 knee surgeries and 3 back surgeries, the last one leaving his left thigh really weak. He said the Rhoades Car is working out his left leg perfectly and he is regaining his strength. He and his wife SuSu are having the time of their lives riding all over downtown Jonesboro. They have been married 29 years and love riding side by side, each pedaling in a comfortable gear, and being able to talk, instead of riding tandem.

Thanks to all these wonderful people for sharing their story with the Rhoades Car family!

Spring into Summer with Rhoades Car

The question we hear frequently is “How did the Prince Harry PR work out for you?” (For those of you who missed it, Prince Harry rode a Rhoades Car at the grand opening of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London on April 4th.) I just got back from the regular meeting of Hendersonville, TN manufacturers and fielded that question three times. The official answer is, it worked out GREAT with many new friends finding the Rhoades Car Facebook page and website! It especially worked out well with the Royal Spring Special in May that offered free shipping or $500 in free upgrades, as this caused many of our new friends to become Rhoades Car owners. However, that was a special promotion and promotions do have to come to an end. BUT . . . it doesn’t mean we can’t have another promotion that’s equally as fun!

Our “Spring into Summer” promotion until June 30th provides a choice between a Visa, Home Depot or Amazon gift card or an even greater amount of free upgrades, so it is easier than ever to join the elite club of Rhoades Car Owners.

But don’t stop there. While you are on our website checking out this new promotion, don’t miss the new blogs we’ve been posting.

Rhoades Car Shows Up at the 2014 Tennessee Bike Summit

“What’s a Rhoades Car?”

The question echoed throughout the opening reception of the 2014 Tennessee Bike Summit when moderator Nora Kern announced that Hendersonville, TN Mayor Scott Foster was scheduled to ride a Rhoades Car the next morning with keynote speaker Kim Wiley-Schwartz, Assistant Director of Education and Outreach for the NYC Dept. of Transportation. I quickly jumped up to say “We make 4-wheel bikes for people of all abilities…1, 2, or 4 seaters, with and without a motor”.

Metro Nashville Public Works brought their recently purchased Rhoades Car over and the ride did in fact happen. To prove it, here’s a short video clip of the interview.

Kim Wiley-Schwartz gave a phenomenal opening presentation about how far biking has progressed in the Big Apple just by clarifying dedicated bike lanes with paint and landscaping….nothing too expensive.

Kim Wiley-Schwartz - opening speaker 2014 Bike Summit

Kim Wiley-Schwartz – opening speaker 2014 Bike Summit

Bruce Day with Bike Walk Tennessee, a member of Alliance for Biking & Walking, and David Kleinfelter with Walk/Bike Nashville discussed the complexities they have overcome to establish official U.S. Bike Route 23 (USBR 23) in Tennessee that covers 154 miles between the Kentucky border, where it joins Kentucky’s existing Mammoth Cave state bicycle route and Alabama.

Ken McLeod with The League of American Bicyclists went on to explain that the U.S. Bicycle Route System (USBRS) now encompasses 5,847 miles of approved U.S. Bike Routes in 12 states: Alaska, Kentucky, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. You can read more here.

The theme of the Summit seemed to be increasing connectivity so people can truly use biking as an alternative to fuel-powered transportation. This goes along with the first report ever released by the US Census Bureau on bicycling and walking to work in the U.S. In other words, enough people are biking and walking to work to warrant the Census Bureau to track this activity officially. This report says that biking represents a larger percentage increase than that of any other commuting mode between 2008-2012 (p. 2).

Many people including Mayor Karl Dean of Nashville discussed the need to continue expanding opportunities for biking, such as on new wider greenways, trails in the state parks, dedicated bike lanes on major streets, etc. The general feeling I got was that the biking community has felt like a stepchild for so long and is now feeling that it is being taken seriously for the first time.

We at Rhoades Car understand that sentiment. So many folks don’t even know we exist, much less understand our purpose. It is exciting to hear all the plans for making more safe areas in which people can ride bikes, but who is reaching out to people who simply can’t ride a two-wheel bicycle? People who are weight-challenged, have balance issues, have had joint replacements, have bad backs or people who are blind or have other special needs that prohibit them from hopping on a two-wheel bike and taking off for five miles? You guessed it.

We are Rhoades Car International and we make bikes for people of all abilities.
